How To Stop A Dog Barking :: Kurrajong Kennels

Do you have a dog that will not stop barking, and at night? Annoying, isn’t it?
Well here are some tips to stop your precious little pooch from barking:

  • Lots of exercise for your dog will reduce barking as their energy levels will be lessened.

  • Do not leave your dog alone for long periods of time.

  • Do not comfort or reward your dog in any way when he or she is barking for attention or barks out of anxiety as this would be encouraging the unwanted behaviour.

  • Attempt to gain your dog’s attention with a clap. Once he or she is quiet, draw their attention to something else such as a treat or toy. After gaining their attention, practice basic commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘lie’ which will alter their focus.

Shock Collars:
A shock collar is not the answer. They can be painful for your dog. As well as this, many dogs will work out ways to work around the collar and it will have no use anymore.

The Neighbours:
Whatever you do, do not allow your dog to bark continuously outside. This can turn into a very bad situation with the neighbours and can result in an official dispute, especially with barking at night.
Disciplinary training is the key here. Keep at it and if need be, take your dog to a training school to learn some valuable techniques in teaching your dog to behave and not bark. A happy dog means a happy owner and most importantly, happy neighbours!
