Dog Tricks - Kurrajong Kennels Sydney

Ever wondered how to teach your dog some new tricks, or even just basic tricks?

Follow these simple steps!

How to teach your dog to ‘sit’:
1.Hold a treat in the palm of your hand and close your hand. Place your hand near your dog’s nose.
2.Move your hand that has the treat inside and slowly move it over your pup’s head and toward its tail.
3. Say your dog’s name and give him/her the command "sit".
4. Praise your dogand every time your pet ‘sits’, give him/her a treat.
How to teach your dog to ‘lie down’:
Follow the same steps as teaching them to ‘sit’ but instead of placing your hand towards the dog’s tail, move your hand down, forcing your pooch into a position that resembles ‘lie down’.

How to teach your dog to shake hands:
1. Hold out your hand flat with a small treat lodged between your palm and thumb.
2. When your dog places his/her paw on your hand, give him/her a treat from your other hand.
3. Repeat this until he/she automatically places his/her paw at your hand when you offer it.

How to teach your dog to ‘roll over’:
If your dog is trained to ‘lie down’ (this will be a lot easier). When your dog is on the ground, place a treat near the back of your dog’s head or neck. He/She will roll over to get it. Do this a few times, and say ‘roll over’ as he/she does the action.

After you train your dog to do these tricks, try reducing the amount of treats you give them. They should start performing the tricks without the need of treats.
